| Coming Out of the Woodwork Using his best Fact Finder detective approach, Kolbe Consultant, Jim Woodford, has unearthed a reference to Kathy Kolbe's work from several years ago. The Special Libraries Association's Transportation Division supports research on transportation issues around the world. In a paper presented at their annual conference in 1996, Kolbe is discussed in a resource guide for a session entitled "Training and Developing the Trainer." The presenter prefaces her selection of Kathy's book, Pure Instinct by saying "At first glance, this might seem like an unusual choice for inclusion in this guide." After explaining the four Action Modes®, three Zones of Operation and instinctive behaviors, the conclusion is that these business concepts rightly belong in an academic setting. "There are some fascinating and useful applications here when applied to the teaching arena and in determining personal styles. The chapters on 'Acting on Instinct' and 'Training' are especially revealing." Thanks, Jim, for being true to your MO and for sharing. | "What Next Nurse?" Those readers working in or servicing the medical field might be interested in this book by Melodie Chenevert. Melodie has written this wonderful text to help nurses (and other medical professionals) evaluate their careers and make sense of their lives. In the chapter entitled "Happily Ever After," she discusses what a powerful revelation it was for her to discover Kathy Kolbe's work through The Conative Connection. Much of what was revealed to her had immediate and profound application in career counseling. She reports that for the first time she understood why some nursing students did so well in the classroom but struggled in the practical application of their profession. The old adage from nursing school that stated "If the students know the theories, if they understand the concepts, it will come out of their fingers," is now and forever labeled a crock. Without a goodly amount of Implementor talent, any healthcare professional is likely to struggle at this juncture of the training rotation. Her solution for healthcare delivery is a simple but solid one: Build teams that have a diversity of ways to take action. Melodie gets it! She's a proud convert to the Kolbe way of getting things done and has incorporated a Kolbe module into her many speaking and training engagements. More information can be found at www.pronurse.com where copies of this engaging book are also available. ^ return to top |

| Career Paths of Others with Your MO The Kolbe A™ Index result's eight pages of text are chock full of useful information. It's common to have people proclaim that the uplifting words found there have changed their lives. The self-validation is powerful and creates a heady sense of freedom that is priceless. However, more questions come up over the section on Career Paths than on any other. Many people are very literal, and when they don't find their particular job listed they worry that they might be mismatched. Others see jobs that they wouldn't consider under any circumstances. Our advice to all is to lighten up and accept the section for what it was intended. The intent was to convey to the reader that other people in Kolbe's database with the same MO as the reader hold some of these jobs. By no means was the list meant to be all-inclusive, nor was it meant to imply that one's particular MO is not suitable for a myriad of other positions in the workplace. At the end of the day, a person can do most any job for which suitable training is available and the commitment to high performance is present. After all, it's not what you do but how you go about doing it that is at the core of the Kolbe Concept®. ^ return to top |

| Dysfunctional Strengths Lead to Corporate Scandals Kolbe licensee Joan Wright of O'Sullivan Wright Consulting in Charlotte, North Carolina recently made us aware of a dynamite Kolbe application. From an article entitled "Enron, Worldcom And The Rest: Case Studies In Dysfunctional Strengths," comes a powerful piece of information. A survey of 200 senior executives in the USA generated the conclusion that lack of balance was the single most important trait missing in the senior ranks of companies now in trouble. Adrian Savage, a global organizational development expert who commissioned the survey, contends "Even treasured strengths can become dangerous weaknesses if they grow preeminent. Such dysfunctional strengths are the root of problems affecting businesses and Wall Street." One lack of balance is achievement not tempered by values such as fairness and justice. Kolbe has much to add here through the application of the Dynamynd®, a measuring stick for ensuring executives develop their affective sense of values as surely as their cognitive skills and conative talents. Another form of balance that Kolbe has huge sway over is putting together management teams in which no MO dominates so thoroughly that checks and balances can't come into play. Where does an organization find itself when it is controlled by Quick Start improvisation for extended periods of time without any Follow Thru controls and compliance? We have some very apparent cases in bankruptcy and legal interdiction where one doesn't have to speculate very widely to come to a conclusion on the key causes. Joan Wright thinks the situations identified in the article are "another way of describing what the Kolbe approach can do to support organizations." We agree. If you'd like more information on how to go about doing this, please get in touch with your Kolbe representative. ^ return to top |
