Greetings!

The Conference Board recently shared research indicating that of the tens of millions of dollars spent on workforce technical training, less than 10% of what is taught in the classroom gets transferred to the job. A corollary finding is most managers are used to setting objective job requirements with "technical talents" but not "personal talents."

As we approach the end of another year, more than ever before the insight that Kolbe consultants possess about these elusive "personal talents" is needed in the workplace to help companies realize their return on investment in training. May the New Year bring plenty of opportunities for all of us.

Quote of the Month
"The great decisions of human life have as a rule far more to do with the instincts and other mysterious unconscious factors than with conscious will and well- meaning reasonableness. The shoe that fits one person pinches another; there is no recipe for living that suits all cases."

- Carl Jung

Questions for Kathy Kolbe

Question: While re-reading your December 2001 newsletter on your website, I found a good explanation of the difference between an "ipsative" instrument which Kolbe is and a "normative" instrument such as an IQ test. I remember you saying that an overall Kolbe result (say, 8273) was ipsative because no person had more conative energy than another person. However, I also remember you saying that each Kolbe Action Mode was normed, leading me to understand that if one person has 8 units of Fact Finder, she has more Fact Finder energy than someone with 3 units. This really seems to contradict my understanding that it takes as much energy to resist or prevent things from happening in a Mode as it does to initiate action. Did I misunderstand you?

Answer: What a great question! You heard me exactly right and your question lets me clear up a great misunderstanding. Anybody who has seen conation in action can clearly observe that there is nothing passive about people whose Kolbe results fall into the Preventative Zone. Someone like myself whose Fact Finder results are measured as 2 ergs (units of mental energy) can be dogged in her need to simplify the amount of information which comes flooding in daily. It might be fair to say that someone with 8 units of Fact Finder has more initiating energy, but certainly no more conative energy than my 2 ergs.

So, what does "normative" mean in this scenario? It simply means that if you take the arithmetic average of everyone's Fact Finder energy and determine that it's, say, 5, then on a normal curve, frequently called a Bell Curve, 50% of the people will fall above the midpoint and 50% will fall below. The Curve will flatten as it moves toward either end, meaning fewer people will show results of 2 or 8 in this Mode, as compared to the bulge in the middle. This is another way our talents are unique, as opposed to a cognitive measure where falling to the left side of the curve has serious implications for our ability to succeed.

Focus on Team Dynamics

The lack of team cohesion, synergy, chemistry, whatever we want to call it, is a killer for workplace productivity. There are times when just looking at the makeup of a team creates doubt about its probability of success. The importance of this element is such that it is now showing up as a financial disclosure in information going to investors in public companies in the United States.

Here's an example of so-called "Risk Factors" from a 10 K report: "Since April 2004, we have made significant changes in our senior management team. Because of these recent changes, our management team may not be able to work effectively to successfully develop and implement our business strategies and financial operations. If our new management team is unable to achieve these goals, our ability to grow our business and successfully meet operating challenges could be impaired."

Admittedly, not all team effectiveness problems are conative in origin, but for those that are, the TeamTactix software will give a trained analyst immediate insight into the problem and prescriptive recommendations for improving the outcome. In the company quoted above, the stakes are huge.

Kolbe Consultants Take Control

Consultants listed on Kolbe's websites report receiving inquiries in their areas about services. Unfortunately, too few of our consultants are actually featured. Those recently certified are often so overwhelmed with new information that they don't realize their newcomer packets include instructions for registering and being added to the list. We've not always been sufficiently proactive in communicating with our established consultant cadre about how to become listed. Further, changes of basic contact information have not always been added to the websites in a timely manner.

Now the control shifts to your hands. You can directly access the Kolbe site, add or modify information in the template provided and position yourselves to receive inquiries about your Kolbe services. For complete information on how to take advantage of this free advertising opportunity, click here and follow the easy instructions. Everyone benefits when we can accurately depict the impressive coverage of consultants capable of offering Kolbe solutions worldwide.
