Increasing Knowledge of Conation
In 1990 when Kathy Kolbe authored The Conative Connection, she was often accused of making up the word "conation." So unknown was the word that it was rarely found in dictionaries, except for an edition called "The Thousand Most Obscure Words in the English Language." While hardly a household word today (try typing conation into any word processing program you use and then hit spell check), there is a growing base of knowledge being built around the concept.

For those who would like to delve deeper into the subject, the following link will take you to a learned article entitled "Conation as an Important Factor of the Mind" which is supported by an extensive bibliography. The author, W. Huitt, knows Kathy's work well and he easily puts it into context by stating, "In Kolbe's formulation, it is the combination of the striving instinct, reason, and targeted goals that results in different levels of commitment and action." He lists the four Kolbe Action Modes and generally integrates Kathy's work into this review of some of the research in the area of conation and volition, giving examples of how these issues can be addressed in the learning process. Critical to this thinking is the principle that conation is necessary to explain how knowledge and emotion are translated into behavior in human beings, exactly the same three parts of the mind message Kathy has been talking about for the last two decades.

If you are a parent, a teacher or an interested taxpayer, you will find much wisdom in this article and a suggestion as to how inserting the conative into the educational arena would positively affect outcomes for our children.

Executive Leadership Development In Europe
Kolbe Corp is pleased to make our European clients aware of an important executive development opportunity on March 6-8, 2002. The three-day program is geared to senior managers and executives and is the product of a joint venture between Rotterdam School of Management and the Erasmus School of Economics at prestigious Erasmus University in the Netherlands. Combining innovative theoretical concepts and a clear emphasis on problems pertaining to real business life, sessions will be led by Kolbe-trained consultants, Patrick Lybaert of Belgium and Dr. Stephen Booy of the United Kingdom.

The Kolbe Concept is used as a building block to predict individual and team performance along "The Path to Peak Performance." If your company has personnel in Europe, this is the kind of program that could benefit their development while also introducing them to Kolbe as an organizational tool.

Check out the details by going to the website on www.mbf-international.com/trueleadership and following the buttons labeled "The Programme" and "Special Feature."

Kolbe Down Under
Kolbe Corp's initial thrust into the international arena was in Australia. Following an incredibly successful platform speech to the insurance industry's Million Dollar Roundtable in June of 1987, Kathy was invited to speak in a similar capacity to the high performers in the Australian insurance industry a few months later. Thus was born Kolbe Australia and it flourished into the '90's until a gross misuse of Kolbe's intellectual property resulted in a nasty lawsuit initiated by us to defend our rights. Long story made short is that we withdrew our active presence in the marketplace until we prevailed in the courts.

Now to tap a strong latent interest in Kolbe which has been enhanced through website offerings, Kathy is set to tour Australia during March. Evening public seminars are scheduled in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane as well as media and client contacts throughout the country. The trip will culminate with a three day certification seminar in Sydney on March 25-27 which is expected to not only draw participants from Australia and New Zealand, but throughout the entire Asia Pacific region.

If you'd like to know more, please check out the arrangements at the Pow Wow Events web link below. Pow Wow Events will not only handle all logistics for the tour but will provide ongoing support to Kolbe users after the events. www.powwowevents.com.au

Kolbe to the Rescue
"I have a new employee who seems to take forever to get things done. It drives me crazy. We are a small office of three and everyone has to do many things. But, she is so slow. Can Kolbe help?"

Yes, we can. We utilized all three Kolbe Indexes (A, B, C) and found the owner of the company and his new employee to be similar in Fact Finder and Follow Thru. The issue here was Quick Start. The employee had four less units of QS and it was causing problems. The owner of the company had a penchant for trying to make everyone work like he did. Like most owners he wanted things done his way, which usually meant immediately. His newest hire was preventative in QS. She prevented chaos and had an instinct to stabilize situations. What he perceived as slow was actually her natural talent (MO 8624) for keeping the office running smoothly and making sure things didn't fall through the cracks by double and triple checking that things were correct.

A less obvious tension point was that their Fact Finder talents were both in the Initiating Zone. The owner needed to understand his new employee's need for information was as great as his own. Before she will "speed" through his projects, he needed to make sure she had enough information to proceed. The owner saw no need to explain his rationale (MO 7563); he had thought it through and knew it was the best way to proceed. Besides if it took too much time, he was off on another project. So for him "just do it" was the right amount of information.

What was the outcome of knowing just that much more about how each of them took action? "I have so much more respect now for her talents and have been able to let go of my 'slow' perception. I now understand what her needs are and things are running much smoother. The benefits have even extended to my customers."
