Hiring - RightFit - Using it Right At Kolbe Corp we are always pleased when our clients embrace their Kolbe results like a long lost friend. Armed with the knowledge of their MO, they often feel validated and liberated and want to share Kolbe with their families and coworkers. We're proud of that. However, our concern comes when our clients take the Kolbe A into the workplace and want to make it do more than it was ever intended to do. The hiring process is one area of common misapplication. You simply can't look at your Kolbe A (say, 4384) and guess what you really need in the way of a support person is a 6843, Follow Thru/Fact Finder. It just doesn't work that way. Until you have gone through the process of creating a hiring profile on the position, you have never faced the discipline of trading off certain energies, or methods of problem solving, for others. Since we can't be a 10 in everything, it's all about the trade offs. Part of building the profile is defining the requirements of the job. By using a Kolbe C Index, you are constantly faced with deciding what you would most reward and least reward in certain scenarios. People are often surprised to find what they thought they needed was not supported by the answers they chose when evaluating the job. There are other considerations in job success, such as the MO of the supervisor and other team members, the knowledge of how other high performers functioned in the job, and whether or not the whole screening process for selection complies with all appropriate laws for non-discrimination in the workplace. For those reasons we have designed a special program called Kolbe RightFit™ that meets or exceeds all legal requirements for hiring, and when used properly, gives you the highest probability of success in this very tricky process of putting the right person in the right job. We encourage you to call or e-mail Kolbe Corp today and ask for a sales advisor to walk you through the RightFit program. Do it right and end the guessing! Our new RightFit Express is coming! Look for an announcement soon of a substantial enhancement to our delivery system for the RightFit product. Most of the intervention by Kolbe Corp personnel to process and generate your Range of Success™ and Candidate Reports will be eliminated and you will be able to access this information directly from the internet. This savings of time and ease of operation is one more reason to use the program correctly. ^ return to top

We Are Who We Are Among our Kolbe Certified consultants the most active correspondent is Jim Woodford. Always looking for articles and writings of interest in support of Kolbe's mission, his 8 in Fact Finder ferrets out some good information. This time he shares a personal story that aptly demonstrates the Fact Finder/Implementor talents (7617 MO) of one of his clients. It seems that the client's wife bought a Saab car for 500 bucks, apparently a nice car but it wouldn't run. So he took it to a mechanic who took the engine apart and then not only couldn't figure out what was wrong with it but also couldn't put it back together. So engaging the FF, the client goes out and buys a Saab manual with great detail about the engine - he reads the book, he looks at the engine and in the end figures out that the problem is a faulty timing chain. But the car is so old that he can't find a replacement part. So he goes back to the manual and after studying pictures of the timing chain, he said, "Looks like a bicycle chain to me." So he goes out and buys a bicycle chain, takes out the main link, puts the chain in the engine. He then puts the main link back in and the car ran for three years on the bicycle chain. Using his FF talent to diagnose the problem and his IM talent of knowing just the right piece to put in the right place, Jim's client used a bicycle chain to fix a car engine! How's that for being true to your MO, eh? ^ return to top

A New Model, and Kolbe is Included We depend on all of you to help extend our reach. That's why we were so pleased when Kris Olsen of Lutheran Brotherhood recently made us aware Kolbe was featured in the April issue of the Performance Improvement Journal. Published by the International Society for Performance Improvement, the Journal presents articles focused on improving productivity and performance in the workplace. The article is entitled "A New Model for Systematic Competency Identification" and the co-authors start by saying that "Identifying job competencies has traditionally used more art than science." They then review several approaches, including different techniques or models, which have not worked in the past and the reasons for their lack of success. The authors postulate that before you can select the appropriate competencies, you must first know what high performers look like in a particular job. How do you do that? Well, you use Kolbe "to identify attributes among exemplary performers." They claim identifying these "attributes" is a huge guessing game, but it needn't be if you use the Kolbe A™ Index. Once you have the individual results, or competencies, you match those to the attributes of the jobs. You then edit for skills and knowledge and take into account other factors such as internal support and human relations needed to perform in the job. Described as rigorous and systematic, the authors feel they are using existing technology, including Kolbe, to build accurate pictures of job requirements that are truly performance based. A full copy of the article, reprinted with permission, can be found on the Team Strategies page at www.warewithal.com. More information on the International Society for Performance Improvement can be found on their website at www.ispi.org. ^ return to top

Best Ever PGS May 2 & 3. Has it been that long since Kolbe's annual Professional Growth Seminar (PGS) was concluded? With close to 100 participants sharing experiences, guest speakers, break-out sessions, and Kathy's time at the podium, the place was rife with learning opportunities. Those of you on the invitation list have experienced the extensive training schedule we offered you this year. Special thanks to Anne Coulter Tobey for discussing her years of experience in using both Kolbe and Myers Briggs in her consulting practice and to Mari Martin for sharing the secrets of how to build a successful Kolbe business from scratch. Everyone in attendance concluded that this was the best PGS ever and that this is the best format for sharpening their skills and knowledge of Kolbe products and services. We agree, but we also know that some of you may be facing circumstances that would make it impossible for you to attend on a particular date. For that reason we are addressing the issue of allowing consultants to make up the session by completing a review of certain materials presented at PGS and demonstrating their knowledge of the various Kolbe applications. By now you should have received an invitation from Kolbe Corp to extend your license with us by completing the homework process that will be in the mail to you by the end of next week. If you have not heard from us with the initial invitation, please get in touch with your sales advisor at our office. PGS 2003 has already been set for May 1-2, 2003. Mark your calendars! ^ return to top

Website Enhancements Kolbe en Espaol - We are now offering for the first time the possibility of going online and completing the A, B and C indexes in Spanish. As of now the results still print out in English but this critical first step allows native Spanish speakers the comfort of completing the Kolbe questionnaires in their own language, thereby assuring a greater accuracy in the end product. Additional foreign language offerings will be added as time permits. Kolbe Certified Consultants Online - We value our cadre of talented Kolbe consultants and want the world to know it. For that reason all Kolbe External Specialists (KES) in good standing have been offered the option of being listed on our website by geographical location with name, address, website and e-mail. Please let us know if this listing is an effective way for you to generate leads. ^ return to top
