Recommended Reading
Dr. Edward Hoffman is a licensed clinical psychologist based in New York City. A critically acclaimed author, he is best known as the official biographer of Abraham Maslow, the noted guru who first articulated the now-famous hierarchy of inborn needs.

Now that we've established the credentials, we're excited to give you information on Hoffman's latest book, Psychological Testing at Work, just released by McGraw-Hill. Prominently featured in this seminal resource for Human Resources executives is Kathy Kolbe's work, particularly in what Hoffman calls the identification of "problem solving styles." Here are some excerpts:

"The focus only on personality and cognition has badly ignored a third, and definitely separate, dimension of human performance. For too long it's been unexplored both conceptually and methodologically. Fortunately, the situation is now changing...To a degree difficult to imagine a generation ago, (managers and executives are) awakening to the realization that this third way offers a huge opportunity for enhancing individual and group productivity."

According to Hoffman, Maslow's work on human potential attributes the success of high achievers to "knowing, trusting and, above all, acting upon their particular innate nature." Maslow became convinced that this was the secret to employees working productively in teams but did not live long enough to do the empirical work to substantiate his theory.

Here's where it gets very exciting because Hoffman then proclaims that Maslow's "torch has been passed to two particular organizational consultants, Dr. Michael Kirton and Kathy Kolbe." Continuing with a review of each of their work, Kirton in the UK and Kolbe in the US, Hoffman comes to the conclusion that both rightly see cognition and personality alone as inadequate to focus on how people go about solving problems. His conclusion is that the approach, which includes finding solutions to problems, "offers a fresh, 'third way' of measuring and optimizing individual employee and team achievement."

Executive in Residence
Kolbe Corp is pleased to announce an Executive in Residence program with Cathy Diorio, former senior executive with PepsiCo, Inc., as the first recipient.

Cathy worked at PepsiCo for 15 years. She spent the first 10 years in NY running PepsiCo's International Treasury department where she was responsible for financing PepsiCo's soft drink, snack foods and restaurant businesses around the world. She then moved to Toronto to be Chief Financial Officer of KFC Canada and, later, Pepsi-Cola Canada. Cathy left Pepsi in 1998 to take a sabbatical to redirect her career. She is spending six months with Kolbe Corp working with specific clients and serving in a strategic business advisory capacity.

"My Kolbe results are 7742 and I am currently working as a legal secretary which suits me fine. According to my Kolbe results, I should use my fact finding and follow thru skills to my utmost. I should also somewhat avoid using mechanical equipment--because I would be working out of my natural instinct.

The reason I see a disconnect here is that for 8 years of military service I was essentially a mechanic, a job at which I excelled as demonstrated by consistently excellent performance reviews. Even though I answered many Index questions with mechanics-related answers as my 'least likely option,' I certainly am quite mechanically talented (especially for a woman). Do you think perhaps that it was the fact that I was thrust into a mechanical career field, not quite of my choosing, that I just adapted my conative skills to meet the required mechanical skills?"

Remember that your Kolbe results are clearly indicative of what you will and won't do if left to your own devices. However, they are not indicative of what you can and can't do. If I were your supervisor and assigned you a task and gave you complete freedom to accomplish it in any way that you saw fit, you would immediately go about gathering information in a precise, detailed and thorough way (your 7 in Fact Finder at work). Then it would be put into context through some method or system that would guarantee that it could be accessed and utilized in planning, programming or organizing (your 7 in Follow Thru at work).

At the end of your military service you chose legal secretary as a profession because it allowed you to function in an initiating Fact Finder and Follow Thru way. In the service, your need was to function in a very hands-on or mechanical way. Particularly on the front end, your Fact Finder and Follow Thru were very much engaged as you learned the procedures and began to apply them. You were trained and worked with very detailed tech manuals that permitted no deviation from the accepted procedures. It was very much a by-the-book approach of standardized manual processes that your 2 level of Implementor was able to accomplish at a very high level. I'm sure that you knew the manual so thoroughly that you became the expert in your unit.

I believe someone with substantially more Implementor than you, say 7 units, and with less Follow Thru talent than you would have become disgruntled with the job. Once they mastered the mechanical requirements, they would not likely have had the sense of individual workmanship or craftsmanship that would let them feel responsible for quality.

"I did indeed enjoy the exacting detail with which I was required to work while in the service. There was not much room for error. You are correct in that some people would quickly find the necessity of manuals and step-by-step procedures quite dull--I would venture a guess that those individuals were indeed Implementors".

Those of you who have attended Certification may recall that there is a rather large manual called "Statistical Analysis".
