What the heck is that? If high Quick Start is the typical sales mode, how can I teach Fact Finders to sell? We've got a couple of good professionals in our office who are constantly going at each other. How can your system be used to eliminate conflict in relationships like this? I've found that people in our company who are high in Quick Start are also loud and assertive. Why is this? Is it possible to have two people with such different MO's that they simply can't get along? Can you use Kolbe to identify people who just shouldn't be involved in a project? Are there people who just can't adapt? Will Kolbe Index results help me make retirement decisions? Will knowing my boyfriend's Kolbe result help me know if I should marry him? Does the combination of someone's Quick Start and whether they are an introvert or extrovert make a difference in whether they are suited for a sales position? I just completed a Kolbe Index and my results said I was "In Transition". What the heck is that? Don't be alarmed. Most of us go through periods just like this from time to time. The results indicate that you are not able to work in a way that is natural for you. You've adopted methods to satisfy others' expectations (because of professional or perhaps personal change), and you don't give yourself permission to do things your way. This can be stressful; re-examination of your methods--and motives--is in order. Once the underlying conditions leading to this conflict are gone, a retest should give you a valid and valuable assessment of your natural talents. To retake a Kolbe A™ Index after receiving a Transition Result, you should call us at (602) 840-9770 to purchase a $20 coupon for a Retake. Please have your credit card, the name of the person who completed the Index, and the username. If high Quick Start is the typical sales mode, how can I teach Fact Finders to sell? A large percentage of successful sales people initiate action with Quick Start (7-10 on the scale). Fact Finders may not find that it comes as naturally, but they can be successful, given the right opportunities and training. Fact Finder initiation (7-10) requires thorough background information on the product or service. This includes very specific instruction on handling questions and objections. You can assist Fact Finders by offering sources of additional details, and providing case studies, testimonials, historical information and relevant data. Be sure they can review comparative pricing and benefits. When they are completely prepared, give them large institutional, governmental or corporate accounts so they can develop relationships and gain expertise in their customers' needs. They are likely to become specialists by industry or type of client and become authorities on the use of your product or service. We've got a couple of good professionals in our office who are constantly going at each other. How can your system be used to eliminate conflict in relationships like this? Determining the source of the conflict is the place to start, and this is not easy. If the conflict stems from discernable personality differences, the Kolbe Wisdom™ may not provide a solution. Look for descriptors for either one such as autocratic, demanding, manipulative, arrogant, obnoxious, loud, assertive, etc. These all describe social-style traits that have nothing to do with Kolbe's definition of how people take action. If, on the other hand, the conflict seems to arise from a lack of respect or understanding for the way the other person solves problems or accomplishes tasks, Kolbe has something to work with. Perhaps one person resists working within systems created by the other. If each were to acquire a good understanding of the natural and necessary way the other takes action, the situation would be defused. When it becomes clear that there is no intention by the "violator" to tear down the other's work, but rather a need to not be boxed in too tightly, you begin to understand. Likewise, there has to be some understanding of the need for systems in any modern organization and acceptance that their creators need not automatically be identified as control freaks. The seeds for conflict are the seeds of synergy, as well; the results depend on how they are watered. Remember, people don't have to like each other to work together effectively. I've found that people in our company who are high in Quick Start are also loud and assertive. Why is this? There is absolutely no connection between those two characteristics. Quick Start is a conative Action Mode® describing innovators and change agents while being "assertive" falls under social style. Being "loud" is just plain bad manners; it definitely isn't conative. We see some very introverted Quick Starts who certainly wouldn't fit your description above. Sorry you're stuck working with them. Is it possible to have two people with such different MO's that they simply can't get along? It is certainly possible for this to be the case, but we have frequently found that simply becoming aware of the requirements put upon the other person (by virtue of being born with a particular MO) actually defuses a conflict. If my Fact Finder is at an initiating level (7-10), I have a "need" for assessing a problem with detailed information and my request to you for more information is not designed to vex you or slow up the process, but rather my natural way of operating. Similarly, my initial negative interpretation of how you "fly by the seat of your pants" can take on a very positive spin when I see how spontaneously you were able to summarize my data for the boss. "Different strokes for different folks" has a valuable message for all of us. Can you use Kolbe to identify people who just shouldn't be involved in a project? Are there people who just can't adapt? The Kolbe Wisdom™ is not about what we can or can't do in a given situation; rather, it is about what we will do, are willing to do or won't do. People will do their best work when their talents are matched to the task. That doesn't mean that for even short periods they would be incapable of working against their grain. However, putting them in a situation where they are consistently asked to work in ways that are not natural for them will not only increase their stress level, but also will result in their not being able to give you their greatest productivity. Will Kolbe Index results help me make retirement decisions? Absolutely! When better to assure that you find the freedom to be yourself. Will knowing my boyfriend's Kolbe result help me know if I should marry him? There is no perfect match on Kolbe results that predicts success in marriage. The important issue is that you find a relationship in which the other person respects who you are and nurtures your natural abilities. If you are put down by another person for doing things according to your natural inclinations, chances are that you would not find the encouragement to be free to be yourself. Knowing what your boyfriend (or girlfriend) wants in a relationship is key to assessing the potential for a positive long-term relationship. Desires can change, and the Kolbe Relationship Index (Kolbe R™ Index available online) provides a non-judgmental way to bring desires out in the open, compare them to realities, and deal with the differences. For more information on the Kolbe R Indexes, click on http://www.kolbe.com/Kolbe_products/relationshipBuilder_package.cfm. Does the combination of someone's Quick Start and whether they are an introvert or extrovert make a difference in whether they are suited for a sales position? You cannot use a person's level of extrovert or introvert-edness as an indicator of how they will perform in a job and there is no statistically proven correlation between success in sales and introvert/extrovert results on any affective test that we are aware of. We have not proven a link between zones in an Action Mode® and affect. We would be in a danger zone to veer from the RightFit selection process which is based on objective, non-biased criteria we have statistically established and is used exclusively in our recommendations. ...Back to Top FAQs - Kolbe A™ Index Can you use the Predictive Index or the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator with the Kolbe A™ Index? Are they compatible or do they measure the same thing? Why doesn't my Index result add up to 20? I'm confused. I visited your website 6 months ago and filled out a Kolbe test. I went back to look the other day and started reading about a job Index and now wonder if I took the right test, since I mostly wanted some feedback about working and was I in the right job. Can people "mess with the test" or manipulate their responses to get a desired -- rather than truthful result? Does it matter how long it takes to complete the Kolbe Index? If I take the Index a second time and get a different result, which is likely to be most accurate, the 1st or 2nd result? Does it matter where I take the Kolbe Index? Are you ever too old to take the Index? Do health issues influence Kolbe results? What is it about the questions the Kolbe test asks that truly determine our instinctive behavior? If you are a 19-year-old university student with limited job experience which Index do you take, the Kolbe A™ Index or the Kolbe Y Index? Why do you need Demographic information? Can you use the Predictive Index or the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator with the Kolbe A™ Index? Are they compatible or do they measure the same thing? The Predictive Index measures traits falling within the affective part of the mind--entirely different qualities than does the Kolbe (which is a measure of the conative domain), so they do not provide redundant information. Assessment tools for the affective domain and the Kolbe Index identify entirely different human characteristics. I believe that there are more than four attributes which can be measured in the affective domain, but whether a tool Indexes four, five, seven, ten or a 100 characteristics is irrelevant. If the instrument asks questions related to any of the following, it will gather information related to the affective domain: Desires Preferences Social Style Values Beliefs Personality Attitude If the assessment tool asks questions related to the following, it will gather information related to the conative (or instinct-related) domain: Drive Mental energy Innate abilities Natural inclinations Modus operandi Needs Self-determination An accurate prediction of affective behavior will describe what a person WANTS or WISHES would happen. Knowing that desires can change over time, authors Myers and Briggs recognized that their instrument (the MBTI) ought not to be used for selection. Such instruments generally have around 44% test-retest reliability. An accurate prediction of conative behavior will describe what a person WILL and WON'T do when taking action. Instincts are innate and do not change over time, so a valid assessor of this domain would have a much greater reliability. The Kolbe A™ Index has a proven reliability of over 80%, making it the most reliable selection tool on the market today. Conative and affective tools can both play important roles in team success. The Kolbe conative system (WAREwithal software) predicts how people will act, react and interact. It doesn't identify whom they want to be with, or whether they approve of behaviors or value similar attributes; these are affective issues. The Predictive Index can help explain why people like or dislike each other. The Kolbe explains why they either will or will not get results if those people work together. Why doesn't my Index result add up to 20? Because there are no right or wrong instincts and no right or wrong answers to the questions on the Kolbe Index, there is no right or wrong Result. While many Results will total 20, if you add the scores in all four Action Modes, the questions, scoring, algorithm and Results are not designed to always generate a score that will sum to 20. Therefore, your score may be less than or more than 20. The key is to focus on where your talent lies in each of the four Action Modes - whether you Initiate, Respond, or Prevent. We know this is different than the type of results you're used to seeing from "tests" and it may take some getting used to. I'm confused. I visited your website 6 months ago and filled out a Kolbe test. I went back to look the other day and started reading about a job Index and now wonder if I took the right test, since I mostly wanted some feedback about working and was I in the right job. You undoubtedly completed a Kolbe A™ Index, which was the right one to take. The Kolbe A™ gave you accurate information on your natural way of problem solving and taking action, whether at home, at work or out in the community. The Kolbe B™ Index gives you information on how you feel your job needs to be done; it can be very useful when compared to your natural way of working, particularly in identifying stress points or major differences between the two. If you would like more information on how the two are used together in the workplace, give us a call at 1-800-642-2822. Can people "mess with the test" or manipulate their responses to get a desired -- rather than truthful result? We certainly cannot stop people from trying to manipulate their results. However, one of the strengths of Kolbe Index results is that they pick up the inconsistencies which are highly likely to occur when a person does not answer truthfully. It is extremely difficult to select an answer that would cause you to perform less effectively in an attempt to "look better." If people believe that getting a job, for instance, requires that they answer contrary to who they are, they would also have to perform against their grain should they get the job. Therefore, this inappropriate effort in taking the Kolbe, when detected by our algorithms, results in prospective employers receiving a warning that the job candidate needs to retake the Index before being considered for employment. Individual results, in these situations, indicate the inconsistencies and lack of ability to predict performance based upon them. This has proven to be valuable information in the selection process, for both employers and employees. If your Index results indicate Transition you can order a CD that has Kathy Kolbe discussing transition results. Does it matter how long it takes to complete the Kolbe Index? No. Most people finish it in 15-20 minutes, but taking more or less time has not proven to influence results in any way. If I take the Index a second time and get a different result, which is likely to be most accurate, the 1st or 2nd result? It is rare to have a Kolbe Index result change significantly upon retake. Studies show this happens less than 12% of the time, unless the original result shows "Transition," or the temporary inability to report how you naturally take action. Results that do change are generally because a person desires a different one for some reason. Research shows that the first result is the most accurate because it is less influenced by such desires. If you take the Kolbe A™ or Kolbe Y™ Index a second time because of a Transition result, the second (if it does not also show Transition) will be the truer picture of your natural abilities. Does it matter where I take the Kolbe Index? No, not at all. Your answers will be just as accurate whether you compete the Index at home, work, school, on vacation or in a sauna. Are you ever too old to take the Index? Never. Your instincts are important to understand and validate at any age. Do health issues influence Kolbe results? If the problem impacts your ability to read or understand the questions, it could influence your results. You would likely show a Transition result. Struggling with health problems does not change who you are, but it does limit the intensity with which you are able to express your instinct-based needs. It is extremely helpful to have someone act on your behalf to provide you with the freedom to act according to your instincts, rather than in the way a care giver assumes you ought to act. More information on this issue will be available in the future. If you would like to know more about the influence of instinct on wellness and recovery, please contact us. What is it about the questions the Kolbe test asks that truly determine our instinctive behavior? If you take a close look at the questions you will see that they are all action oriented. None of the questions asks what you "like," what you "prefer," or what you "want." The Kolbe questionnaire focuses on action outcomes in a forced-choice selection: What action would you MOST take and what action would you LEAST take in a given situation? The answers are put into sophisticated algorithms to come up with the predictable ways you approach problem solving, going well beyond traditional preference tests. You can purchase a CD with Kathy Kolbe talking about Kolbe Wisdom by clicking here. If you are a 19-year-old university student with limited job experiences which one do you take, the Kolbe A™ Index or the Kolbe Y Index? We suggest that college students in general take the Kolbe A™ Index. Why do you need Demographic information? Demographic information you supply to us is for our research purposes only. It is not sold or given to any other company for use in any way. Only the fields that are marked with asterisks are mandatory. ...Back to Top FAQs - Kolbe Y My older children took the Kolbe Y™ Index on www.kolbe.com and I don't see any suggestions for possible career paths. I took the Kolbe A™ Index and received a CD; are there CDs that I can give my children too? Do home-schooled children benefit from the Kolbe Y (Youth) Index results? If my child is very young, but understands a 5th grade vocabulary, can she complete the Kolbe Y Index? My 13-year-old son took the Y Index because I wanted to get more insight into his particular way of learning. The results you provided were minimal, and for $50 there should have been more information. My older children took the Kolbe Y™ Index on www.kolbe.com and I don't see any suggestions for possible career paths. I took the Kolbe A™ Index and received a CD; are there CDs that I can give my children too? The results of the Kolbe Y™ Index do not recommend career paths or jobs done successfully by other people with similar results. We don't include that information, as we do in the results of the Kolbe A™ Index, because we do not want to pigeon-hole kids. Our philosophy is that kids need to discover who they are and what will make them successful. We think they can redefine a job and be successful in it by doing it their way, even if their way is different from how others in that job do it. However, the CDs are appropriate for kids as well as adults. You can order Natural Advantage™ CDs on our website by clicking here or by calling us at 602-840-9770. Do home-schooled children benefit from the Kolbe Y (Youth) Index results? Yes. All of the information provided from the Kolbe Y™ Index is helpful for youth, whether in public, private or home school environments. If parents are performing the teaching role, all references to "teachers" can be read as "parents." The information will be just as relevant. Kolbe Corp has plans to provide additional information for home schooling situations. If you would like to be notified when this is available, please contact us. If my child is very young, but understands a 5th grade vocabulary, can she complete the Kolbe Y Index? Yes. You can read the questions to him or her, and explain a few words which may not be fully understood. Be very careful not to make any suggestions regarding the answer, or to influence choices in any way. For your child's privacy, and in accordance with federal regulations, we ask that you use only your own email address and not provide any information which would cause unintended, direct communication with a child younger than 13. Please be assured that we are committed to protecting your child's privacy and the confidentiality of all Kolbe information. My 13-year-old son took the Y Index because I wanted to get more insight into his particular way of learning. The results you provided were minimal, and for $50 there should have been more information. Thank you for communicating your concerns regarding the dollar value in the result you have for your child's Kolbe Y™ Index. What we do not want you to overlook is the information and recommendations we have given your child. The result indicates that he either is struggling through a period of transition, which could explain his lack of clarity in selecting options on the Kolbe Index; or he chose not to answer in ways that reflected his natural strengths -- perhaps "dissing the test." In either case, the result lets him know that he was not indicating who he is, when free to act naturally - and that it may be because he isn't giving himself a chance to be true to himself. We often find that young people try to reflect (or deflect) how they believe others want them to act, rather than being true to themselves. It was our hope in writing the "Transition" result that what was said about their responses will help kids think about the opportunity they are losing to explore their natural abilities. We've tried not to be too "preachy" or know-it-all, which certainly turns them off. Rather the effort has been to ask questions in a non-threatening way. If we say much more than is now in the result, we find they won't read it. There is no doubt that the ideal is to have youngsters with this result follow up with a personal discussion with a trained Kolbe educator or counselor, who can coach them through this situation. It takes a specially trained person to get to the bottom of the reasons for this missed opportunity to indicate their positive attributes. We don't recommend that option on the website because it might be misinterpreted as "just a sales pitch." The most important support you can provide your son as he goes through the self-discovery process is to provide optional ways for getting things done. He needs to be responsible for accomplishing certain goals at home and at school. The key is for him to have the freedom to accomplish them through his own methods. School can be a very Fact Finder/Follow Thru world, if he doesn't fit that pattern, he may find that environment confining -- even depressing. If his parents expect him to do something the way they would do it, the process could be detrimental. He needs to find his own way of accomplishing -- which is how he will build self-esteem and confidence. Please ask your son if he found any benefit from the result, and if he thought it was accurate for his current situation. Kids at this age usually are not very communicative about such things, but it may help him think more about what it said to him. ...Back to Top FAQs - Financial MO+™ In a nutshell, what's this new Financial MO+™? When taking the Financial MO+™, it is asking me to Create A New Kolbe User Profile. Should I be doing this? How can you give me results on the Financial MO+™ when I have never taken the test? I purchased the FMO+™ and now I cannot see the results. What is wrong? In a nutshell, what's this new Financial MO+™? At the heart of the Financial MO+™ is a 36-question assessment known as the Kolbe A™ Index, an instrument that zeros in on an individual's natural talents. Not a personality inventory or an intelligence test, the Kolbe A™ Index measures what people will, won't, or may be willing to do given the freedom to be themselves. These natural talents reveal an instinctive mode of operation, an "MO." The Kolbe A™ Index has been available for several years and over half a million of them have been taken since the assessment's initial launch. The Financial MO+™ adds a valuable new dimension to the company's offerings by putting one's MO in the specific context of financial decision-making. Each person, based on his MO, is inclined to solve problems or take actions in a particular way. Kolbe's research shows that many people find themselves in situations where they do not have complete freedom to solve problems using their MO's, a scenario that often causes stress and strain. When taking the Financial MO+™, it is asking me to Create A New Kolbe User Profile. Should I be doing this? If you have taken your Kolbe A™ Index on www.kolbe.com then use your existing username and password to access your FMO+™. If you have not taken your Kolbe A™ Index on www.kolbe.com (if you took it on www.warewithal.com or with paper/pencil) then you want to create the New Kolbe User Profile. This will allow you to re-access your Financial MO+™ as well as your Kolbe results on the www.kolbe.com website using the username and password that you set up when you created the new user profile. How can you give me results on the Financial MO+™ when I have never taken the test? The Financial MO+™ is based on your Kolbe A™ results. If you have taken the Kolbe A™ then those results are translated into the Financial MO+™ for an additional fee. You do not need to answer questions again. If you have taken the Kolbe A™ Index and would like your Financial MO+™ results, you can log into www.kolbe.com and follow the instructions for locating your Kolbe A™ results. If you have taken your Kolbe A™ Index on www.kolbe.com then you would use your existing username and password to log in to receive your FMO+™. If you have taken your Kolbe A™ Index on www.warewithal.com or via pencil and paper, follow the instructions to create a user profile on www.kolbe.com. This will allow you to access your Kolbe A™ Index results and your FMO+™ online. I purchased the FMO+™ and now I cannot see the results. What is wrong? There are two possible reasons why you many not be able to see your results: missing Flash and internet connectivity. The first reason is due to you do not having the Flash 5 plugin required to view the results. This plugin is free and can be obtained from www.macromedia.com/software/flashplayer. If you have Flash 5 and still cannot view all of your results, you are experiencing the second reason. This deals with your connection to the internet. Internet connectivity tend to slow down across the internet during peak times of internet activity. Try to view your results later to avoid this issue. The FMO+™ results are best viewed with MS Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. ...Back to Top |
