Greetings!

The closer we get to year end, the more time compresses. Our challenge is to maintain perspective. As much as we hurry to close one more deal before shutting down for the holidays, let's make time to reach out to someone who needs a hand, a kind word or some holiday spirit. 'Tis the Season.

Quote of the Month
"I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by."

- Douglas Adams, humoristic novelist and author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Questions for Kathy Kolbe

Question: You've identified four Action Modes® that you say determine a person's MO. Couldn't our modus operandi just be the way we've been taught to act?

Answer: Learned behavior is something you will try when you have time to think about it. In a crisis, it's been shown that we all revert to instincts. Learned behavior is not an MO, but acquired knowledge of what you could or should do - according to whoever taught you.

Since we keep acquiring knowledge (from experience and more formal learning as well), our ideas about what's smart to do often change. Your MO is predictable because it is ingrained. It is the one constant in your life. In fact, it's the only thing about you that you can count on to always be the same - no matter what job you're in, what courses you take, or who tries to convince you it's the wrong approach.

The Market Has Turned

A big developing problem for business may soon represent a market opportunity for Kolbe consultants. Some analysts feel that as the pace of economic recovery picks up, voluntary labor turnover among U.S. corporations will skyrocket. While many business leaders (dumb, fat and happy) feel the workforce should be grateful to just have a job, astute observers are predicting the amount of pent-up turnover to be as incredibly high as 45%.

Management is caught up in reporting that their surveys show worker satisfaction to be quite high. This should be small comfort, however, because in conative terms we know that what workers say they like or appreciate is not an indicator of what they would do when given multiple opportunities.

Furthermore, according to the Harvard Business Review one of the key reasons employees quit is the difference between their expectations and the deliverables in regard to job content. This is a tailor-made opportunity for Kolbe consultants who have the products available to help employers define job expectations and to match them against an employee's natural talents. When an employee's talents are well utilized in the organization, they are less likely to be seduced when job opportunities are more plentiful. This is the kind of bottom-line issue that should be of immense value to business. If you'd like to explore this opportunity further or you have a success story to share, please contact us.
